Note: The Sydney off-site program session details are still to be confirmed.
No architecture firm has had a greater impact on the development of Sydney’s high-rise urbanism than Harry Seidler and Associates. For decades, starting in the early 1960s, the firm left their mark on the city with Modernist concrete high-rises, pioneering the introduction of large open plazas and prominent artwork to office towers in Australia. This session explores the importance of Harry Seidler’s work, examining the structural and spatial innovations that transformed Sydney’s central business district, how new office towers can address challenges and build off the success of these landmark structures, and how the buildings are maintained through retrofits and refurbishment. In addition to the presentations, this session will embrace a walking tour of downtown Sydney, stopping at Australia Square, MLC Centre, and Castlereagh Centre, three of Harry Seidler’s most famous towers, built in 1967, 1977, and 1989, respectively.
